HAM Radio, more officially called Amateur Radio, has a long history that spans the world. HAM Radio Operators communicate with each other over short and very long distances, assist with radio communications during disasters, and provide information to the community.

You don’t have to be highly technical to get involved, and it can be of great benefit to yourself, your family, and your community. When power, internet, cellular, and telephone fail, the radio still works.

You do need to be licensed in order to utilize Amateur Radio frequencies, which means you must pass a test and be assigned an identifier by the FCC. There is quite a bit to learn about how to utilize a radio, but anyone can do it at any age.

The amateur radio community is volunteer driven. There are local clubs in most locales, and plenty of opportunities to participate.

It is encourage that anyone interested pursue obtaining their Technician license at least. It’s a valuable skill and capability to have, and a wonderful hobby.
