GMRS – General Mobile Radio Service
GMRS is a licensed non-commercial radio service consisting of a set of radio frequencies in the 400 MHz band, some of which are are shared with FRS which means some interoperability. This service provides more utility, and higher potential transmit wattage, with somewhat more responsibility than other Personal Radio Services.
For those who aren’t ready or aren’t interested in Amateur Radio, GMRS is an excellent choice. It’s also a great way to learn more about radio which could lead to obtaining your Amateur Radio license. I also recommend that all licensed Amateur Radio users also obtain a GMRS license so that they can relay information between nets.
