GMRS license
A GMRS license costs $70, and is valid for 10 years. You must be at least 18 years old in order to obtain your GMRS license. You may allow family members in your household to use any GMRS equipment you are responsible for.
Licensing is relatively easy, consisting of a two part process. First you must obtain an FRN from the FCC, and then you register for your GMRS license which will provide you with a call-sign.
Step 1. Obtaining your FRN.
Click here to register with the FCC and obtain your FRN. Set your registration type to Individual.
You will be asked to input your personal information, assign a password, and choose a security question and answer. Make sure to keep your password somewhere secure, like in a password manager as you will need it in the next step.
Note: Though it is not required, it is recommended that you provide a valid email address. The FCC no longer mails out license information, but if you have provided an email address it will be sent to you through email.
You will receive your FRN at the end of this process. You should be prepared to save this information somewhere secure.
Step 2. Registering for a GMRS license.
Click here to log in using the FRN number you obtained, and the password you set, from the previous step.
From the left side menu choose Apply for a New License. Select ZA – General Mobile Radio Service as the license type and click Continue.
All of the answers on the next screen are No, which is the default, so just click Continue again.
On the next screen enter your personal details, including your email address, and click Continue.
Provide the necessary answers in the next screens, finally providing payment information to complete the process.
You will receive your license within 10 business days, though they are usually delivered in less than 48 hours.
